Keep a tea diary via the app, and use the online tea database to find new leaves to try. And of course sipping tea is always social, so you can share tips and tasting notes online with other tea aficionados.
The trend in modern kitchen design for the last decade or so has leaned toward a clean minimalist aesthetic, aiming to hide as much clutter as possible from view. Nearly all cookware, tableware and even appliances are rendered virtually invisible with the use of floor-to-ceiling cabinets, camouflaged refrigerator doors, storage islands and other disguises. The effect is undeniably orderly, but it can feel a tad institutional at times. Are we headed toward a backlash?
This Swedish apartment spent 30 years as a storage space for furniture, and in the 1980s, underwent the beginnings of a renovation before the owner’s illness halted the work. The space was left untouched until his death, and went up for sale in 2012. What the buyers saw when they walked in was grim: half-removed wallpaper peeling down to the floor, a kitchen faucet sticking out of one wall, a handful of tiles and rats in the bathroom.
“I think people may be bored of kitchens being as minimal and invisible as possible. I’m demonstrating that kitchens can have a sculptural impact in a space, and promote new ways of eating preparing and enjoying food” says Tom Dixon. The Air Kitchen plays with the idea of floating, using space, open shelves and balanced artifacts from the Tom Dixon collection.
Each piece is seen as a celebration of Sicilian culture and highlights the province’s rich culinary history and picturesque landscapes. Expanding beyond Sicily, some of the appliances have been embellished with images of Italy’s most popular dishes. Naturally, each item bears its own “Made In Italy” hallmark.
“It is a part of the house that is very essential but it occupies a big space and not everybody uses it the same way. The Gali kitchen is the intention of letting each individual distribute their space as they want having everything necessary to cook when wanted or needed but allowing the living space to embrace new possibilities such as nomadic life, as Gali can be taken apart in four modules so you can pack it as part of your luggage when moving.”
The SieMatic kitchen design system is all about versatility and individual choice. The units can be configured to fit your taste, your space and your needs. Even period features like fireplaces are unphased when surrounded by contemporary kitchen cabinetry of such seamless perfection.
Though initially intended to be presented individually in four different countries, the conceptual kitchens were presented together as ‘The Restaurant’ at the Milan Design Week in April 2016. Said Dixon: ”We thought it would be great to bring them all together at the most important design show of all. When we found the 18th century building (Rotonda Della Besana church) in the shape of a cross with four distinct spaces, it was like a sign”.
