Globally renowned designer Tom Dixon was born in Tunisia, moving to England with his English father and French mother when he was four. Self-taught and now a prolific, successful designer his breakthrough worldwide recognition came after he designed a legless chair for Italian brand Cappellini in 1985.

Narrow design of these small baskets lets you save more room for bigger dishes or pots. Detergent dispenser and rinse agent dispenser is in front of the machine in a reachable place. In front of the machine there is a line of LEDs. When you see this light bar from the doorway or other rooms, you can understand which cycle the machine is working on.”
A battery-powered halogen light helps the herbs thrive, and a transparent cover protects them from steam and oil while you’re cooking. Pour water into the reservoir, and the soil sponges will automatically soak it up as needed. A water level indicator on the front tells you when you need to add more. When you’re ready to harvest, just pick up the included pair of scissors, trim away and your cuttings will fall into the removable tray at the base.
‘Gali’ by designer Ana Arana is made up of four luggage-sized modules so it can easily be transported from one location to the next, eliminating the need for a built-in kitchen all together. While unusual, this kind of setup makes interiors far more versatile, enabling residents to make use of the space the way they really need it instead of dedicating a big chunk of an apartment to a function that’s not used very often. This compact kitchen design includes an induction cooktop, basin, refrigerator, drawers and a combination prep/dining table. Everything slides out or folds away.
Though most of the world gets along just fine without dishwashers, a lot of people have gotten accustomed to their convenience, and it’s hard for many people to imagine completing daily kitchen tasks without one. Compared to the process of hand-washing, it’s definitely faster and less labor-intensive, and it can arguably waste less water, depending on the machine. But we tend to take for granted just how easy it is to load it up with dirtied items, add detergent, press a button and wait for them to come out sparkling clean to the point of complaining about the task of putting them away when it’s done.
“I think people may be bored of kitchens being as minimal and invisible as possible. I’m demonstrating that kitchens can have a sculptural impact in a space, and promote new ways of eating preparing and enjoying food” says Tom Dixon. The Air Kitchen plays with the idea of floating, using space, open shelves and balanced artifacts from the Tom Dixon collection.
Opposite the built-in, the other side of the room is left open, with plenty of space for free movement, but it’s easy to imagine this setup working for even smaller apartments lacking that living and dining area, so long as you don’t mind looking down on your partner as they cook. The glass pane gives a new meaning to the phrase ‘breakfast in bed,’ but a curtain panel could always used to provide privacy when desired.
“If we imagine everything is transparent clear and clean, doesn’t it mean that the only thing that is colorful and visible is our food?” says MVRDV co-founder Winy Maas. “I see this as part of a wider dream, this kitchen. It is part of an environment, if not a city, that is transparent and therefore accessible. Imagine if not only our kitchens were transparent, but the walls through to the neighbor and the next neighbor even. This would create infinite perspectives in our cities.” infinity kitchen
