A pair of industrial designers have an idea that could revolutionize this kitchen appliance, vastly improving its usability. The top-loading dishwasher by Moshen Jafari Malek and Behzad Taheri takes up the same amount of space as existing designs, but is tucked behind the cabinets, rising from the countertop in a series of tiers. As long as the cabinet you store dishes in isn’t located directly behind the dishwasher, you’ll have a much easier time putting everything away.
Though initially intended to be presented individually in four different countries, the conceptual kitchens were presented together as ‘The Restaurant’ at the Milan Design Week in April 2016. Said Dixon: ”We thought it would be great to bring them all together at the most important design show of all. When we found the 18th century building (Rotonda Della Besana church) in the shape of a cross with four distinct spaces, it was like a sign”.
Of course, the ideal solution would be to integrate the bar block into a coherently designed kitchen from the outset, but this is not always possible. The Vertical Bar Block brings functionality back to those bothersome corners and small spaces that sometimes evade kitchen designers, and it’s an attractive-yet useful-product that ties the kitchen together to boot.
A battery-powered halogen light helps the herbs thrive, and a transparent cover protects them from steam and oil while you’re cooking. Pour water into the reservoir, and the soil sponges will automatically soak it up as needed. A water level indicator on the front tells you when you need to add more. When you’re ready to harvest, just pick up the included pair of scissors, trim away and your cuttings will fall into the removable tray at the base.
Comprised of a system of open shelving that can be used to store anything from wine bottles to cups and decorative ornaments, the bar block also comes with three specially-designed cutting boards, which slot in and can be easily removed one at a time. The shelves themselves can be repositioned as required, allowing you to clear some space if you ever need to store bigger items.
Mellow keeps your food refrigerated until it’s time to cook it, and uses a very efficient design and process to ensure dinner’s delicious it even asks for feedback after each meal so it can update your preferences. Control the device from your smartphone using Mellow’s built-in Wi-Fi.
With the design, MVRDV is also seeking to disrupt what they call the “generic” aesthetics of the kitchen industry while celebrating the culture of food and cooking. Instead of hiding “both the ugly and beautiful sides of food preparation,” the Infinity Kitchen exposes it all, providing a new insight into food production, storage, and the rituals that are carried out in these spaces every day. Individual elements are showcased, but not in a way that’s just showing off carefully selected items we consider visually pleasing.
Combining the appearance of basalt with highlights of gold and brass (typically ‘Dickensian’ metals), The Fire Kitchen suggests warmth and flame. It resonates beautifully with Dixon’s ‘Melt’ series of pendant light fittings, fashioned in copper.
